Steel Plates Ahead was born simply out of a need to maintain a website on a public domain without having to pay full price for it.

Caleb Sancken and myself decided that we could split a domain—we could each maintain our own subdomains or content areas—each at half the cost. We needed a domain name with shared meaning. After filtering out some bad ideas, we settled on steelplatesahead.com. The name is taken from street construction signs which indicate the use of steel plates to cover holes or patchy areas in the road. We first saw one of these on a trip to Washington, DC in college.

It’s an old inside joke.
